Don’t be a bad boss

I am learning from the mistakes of my boss. Coz I don’t have time to make those when, someday, I would be on his chair.

I had shared this post on Facebook seven years ago. And its relevance hasn’t subsided yet, as I am still learning from the mistakes of my boss. However, after 7 years, circumstances have made me lead a small team and I am implementing those lessons in my office.

The lessons I have learnt so far can be summarized into following points:

  1. Karma was in your favor to keep you on the hot seat of the boss. But that doesn’t mean that your subordinates are less skilled or less qualified than you. A good leader shouldn’t feel shame on learning from the junior staffs.
  2. You as a boss may value your dignity like nothing in the universe. But even the junior staffs have their own level of dignity. Respect it! The thumb rule is – if you respect them, they will respect you back, voluntarily.
  3. Academic degree is just a sheet of paper; your education is seen in your behaviour. Degree may help you get a job. However, it doesn’t help you accomplish stuffs of real life, as our universities don’t teach about the adversities of life.
  4. Don’t just impose your decision in every matter. Many times, your team member can come with creative ideas. Don’t hesitate to imbibe them. It will increase your own overall performances.
  5. No matter how good you treat to the people, there are always few nags in an institution who always inculcate negativities. Instead of indulging in an argument with them, it’s better to simply ignore them and let your aura prevail.
